The Department of Tamil has its origin from the inception of college in 1970. The department of Tamil was elevated into a postgraduate department offering M.A in the year 1987. As the management and the Principal Dr. Sathayaseelan renowned Tamil scholar were keen on the promotion of Tamil studies, the post graduate department was elevated into a research department in the year 1990 by the Bharathidasan University. The Department of Tamil, which is recognized as a research department, added the Tamil B.Litt. course in the year 2004. Though there is a strong demand for the information technology and computer science related courses, the management and the senior faculty members opined to introduce B.Litt. Tamil to make the department of Tamil full fledged from the under graduate to the research level.
The department has a computer and the required software to undertake research and guide the students efficiently. The research committee in the department of Tamil meets regularly to discuss the progress of research done by the scholars. The currently relevant topics for research, the books and journals necessary are discussed, and proposals for seminars and workshop to be conducted are made. The department has a library used for reference by the members of the faculty and the research students.
