The department of computer science was started in the year 1988-89 to match the demand for computer education in Tiruchirappalli. The department was established with adequate computer terminals and other laboratory facilities, as per the requirement prescribed by Bharathidasan University. The M.Sc. Computer Science and MCA courses were started in the year 1990 and 1991.

The students of the computer science faculties have produced excellent results over the years and the alumni of the department are spread all over the globe, serving the field in various capacities. Many of them are employed with reputed companies like Microsoft, Wipro, IBM, HCL, Infosys, Cognizant etc.

Ms. M. Renuka Devi secured university first rank and gold medal from the Bharathidasan University for MCA programme 2003-2006. The department has the unique distinction of having conducted the first ever viva-voce examination online for a candidate who had gone abroad in the year 2002 in the presence of the Vice Chancellor and other dignitaries of Bharathidasan University. This practice of conducting viva-voce online continues till date.
