The department of Chemistry started functioning from the inception of the college in 1970 with Pre-University Class (PUC). In 1976, B.Sc Chemistry was introduced. In 2003 the department grew into a post-graduate department with the grant of affiliation of M.Sc Chemistry by the Bharathidasan University. In 2006, the department became a research department with the introduction of M.Phil Chemistry (Full time and Part time).

All the students of the Chemistry department are free to use books and periodicals in the general library and the M.Sc and M.Phil students are allowed to use the library in the department. Two Computers are available in the department and they are used for teaching the computer related subjects. There are three laboratories (one for UG and two for PG) in the department with adequate provision of chemicals, apparatus and equipments. There is one general Internet lab in the college and the chemistry students also are allowed to make use of it.

The introduction of M.Sc and M.Phil programmes in the chemistry department has enhanced the learning resources in the department. Books of advanced level and periodicals have been added and a new physical chemistry lab has been opened.
